We've Met Before? Bolton Wanderers

October 5th 2022James Williams

Rovers are back at The Bolt New Lawn this Saturday as we host Bolton Wanderers in League One action.

The Trotters spent the 2020/21 season in League Two with FGR but after promotions for both sides in recent years, we now meet again this time in League One.

Here we take a look at the two matches between the sides in that 2020/21 season that saw both teams finish inside the top six.

BOLTON WANDERERS 0-1 FGR – 12/09/20

In the season opener Rovers travelled to the University of Bolton Stadium to take on the recently relegated Trotters with their new manager Ian Evatt at the helm.

The hosts had a massive chance to open their account for the season early on but striker Eoin Doyle could only drag his shot wide of goal.

Rovers had a good chance of their own when Carl Winchester’s free kick dropped to Aaron Collins in the box but the former FGR attacker snatched at the chance.

FGR continued to push for an opener as Ebou Adams blasted a volley over from close range before Collins had another effort, this time his ferocious strike drifting just wide of the far post.

They would however get their goal five minutes into the second half, a brilliant long range effort from Winchester who met the clearance to drive home in off the post.

Bolton pushed for an equaliser and came close through substitute Ali Crawford whose long range effort was thwarted by the brilliance of keeper Luke McGee.

But they wouldn’t get that goal meaning Rovers were heading back to GL6 with three points and a perfect start to the new season.

Paragraph Break

FGR 0-1 BOLTON WANDERERS – 27/03/21

The sides met again in March in front of the Sky Sports cameras this time in Nailsworth both with very realistic aims of promotion on the horizon.

It was a bad start to the game for Rovers as striker Jamille Matt was forced off with a bad injury he picked up in a collision with Jordan Williams.

The visitors came into the clash on an impressive unbeaten run but it was Rovers who had the first chance of note as Kane Wilson raced down the left before bringing a good save out of Matt Gilks.

But the visitors began to grow into the tie and brought Lewis Thomas into action for the first time when George Thomason tried his luck from range.

And they would take the lead five minutes before the break when a well worked move saw Nathan Delfouneso’s cross pick out Doyle to fire Bolton in front.

Into the second half and Rovers struggled to really threaten and get that equaliser as Collins came the closest firing high and wide of goal.

That would be as close as Rovers would come as Bolton held out to take the three back up north.
