Top Five: Reece Brown goals

July 6th 2022James Williams

We announced the return of former midfielder Reece Brown last week, three years on from his departure to Huddersfield Town.

Brown had a very successful time with Rovers and was ever present in his two seasons at the club, scoring 14 goals and notching 19 assists.

Here are five of his most memorable strikes for FGR as we welcome back a real fan favourite to The New Lawn.

A First Goal In Rovers’ First EFL Win

Brown-Goal-Yeovil

On a landmark day for the club back in 2017, Brown opened his Rovers account in some style.

In what was just their second home game in the EFL, Rovers were still looking for a first win but found themselves 3-1 down to Yeovil Town heading toward half-time.

But into first half stoppage time Brown was poised over a free-kick on the edge of the box which he rifled across the wall past Glovers keeper Artur Krysiak in front of the North Stand.

The strike had Rovers back in the game and they would go on to complete a miraculous comeback and run out 4-3 victors, winning a first ever game in the Football League in the club’s history.

It was a momentous day for the club and a great way for Brown to really announce himself to the FGR supporters.

Derby Day Strike

Brown-Goal-Cheltenham

If his first goal for the club didn’t get the Rovers faithful talking, Brown’s second around a month later would certainly do so.

Brown’s next goal for the club came behind enemy lines against rivals Cheltenham Town in the second round of group games.

After finding themselves a goal down not long after the break, Rovers looked to be heading for a first defeat in the competition after a first round win against Newport County.

But with 10 minutes to go the Dudley born ace took aim from distance finding the far bottom corner superbly to bring the scores level.

And just moments later Rovers completed the comeback to win 2-1, with Brown subsequently being named a nominee for Player of the Round.

Free-kick Mercurial

Brown-Goal-Stevenage

Brown proved to be a bit of a dead-ball specialist during his time at The New Lawn scoring free-kicks both home and away.

As Rovers travelled East to face Stevenage, they were looking to build on an impressive away win over Coventry City four days previous.

After going behind before the break, it took until the hour mark for Rovers to level the scores as Brown found his second league goal for FGR.

As he did against Yeovil, Brown reversed his free-kick across the wall this time a low bullet that sent the travelling Rovers contingent wild.

A Chris Doidge header 10 minutes later meant Rovers would take the three points back to Gloucestershire in the middle of an impressive run that saw four wins and a draw in five games.

A Stunner At St James Park

Brown-Goal-Exeter

In the 2018/19 season, Rovers got off to an impressive start losing just one of their first 16 League Two matches.

And the win in the 16th game of the season was arguably the best of the bunch as Rovers took on the previous year’s play-off finalists Exeter City.

After a goalless opening 45 minutes, Brown’s silky dribbling allowed him to work the space in the box before curling a beauty into the far top corner.

Rovers would go on to win 2-1 down in Devon and return to GL6 inside the play-offs, after building on their 3-1 victory over Tranmere Rovers the week prior, which Brown also scored in.

Brown would also net the following week in a defeat to Lincoln City as the midfield star’s impressive season continued.

Vale Park Voyage

Brown-Goal-vale

The former England youth international definitely has a thing for the spectacular and didn’t fail to get people off their seats the first time round with Rovers.

And he did just that on a cloudy afternoon in Burslem scoring his only brace to date for the club against Port Vale.

After blasting in the opener with 20 minutes to play, Brown picked up the ball inside his own half in added time taking it all the way before chipping the keeper to secure the three points.

It was a big win for Rovers as they looked to cement a place in the League Two play-offs for the first time with seven matches to go.

Brown was eventually named Player of the Month for March 2019 as his brace against Vale was two of seven goal involvements in six games.
