Sully: "This is the best week of my life"

Four goals in a week for 18-year-old

November 5th 2023Sam Yapp

Olly Sully says this has been the best week of his life following his midweek hat-trick in the FA Youth Cup and stoppage time equaliser against Scarborough Athletic in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Sully’s 93rd minute goal earned Rovers an FA Cup first round replay and also made him the club's youngest goal scorer in the competition at 18-years-old.

“I am still trying to process it. It’s crazy.” he said.

“To come on was a surreal feeling – and to get a goal is a bonus. I dreamed of scoring, but I didn’t think it would be last minute to send us to a replay. It’s a great feeling to be honest.”

That goal added to Sully’s unforgettable week after he bagged a hat-trick in Monday night’s FA Youth Cup tie with Thame United, which saw the young Rovers come from 3-0 down to win 6-3.

“This is probably the best week of my life," he admitted. "A hat-trick in the week then getting on the bench here and scoring, it could not get much better really.”

“I was buzzing to score a hat-trick on Monday and we’ve got Reading away in the next round, which is going to be a great game to play in."

After finding out he was in the first-team squad on Thursday with Under-18s boss Gary McDermott revealing the good news over the phone, Sully's family made the 500+ mile round trip to North Yorkshire to watch his FA Cup debut, and just his second professional appearance.

When he met Charlie McCann's low cross and fired home with just seconds remaining, Sully ran straight towards his family in the away end.

“Celebrating in front of my mum, dad and grandad was something special. To think that they used to watch me all the time, and now they’re watching me score in the FA Cup... it's amazing.

“I thought I missed it! I misjudged it at first and shot with my left foot, which is my weak one, but I managed to knock it in with my ankle. I just wanted to get anything on it."

“I didn’t know what to do when I scored, I just ran straight to the fans."

Even after the highest moment of his career, Sully offered to help clean the dugouts at the Flamingo Land Stadium - and offered FGR staff a cup of tea when everyone was back on the coach heading towards Gloucestershire.

He said: “You can’t get too happy! I am still one of the young ones and I look up to all of them in there. I’ll do everything I can to be the best person I can be around the squad.”
