Salford City beat Forest Green Rovers 2-0 at The New Lawn in our opening game of the League Two season.
Connor McAleny and Matt Smith’s goals saw victory for the away side, meanwhile Forest Green, despite the better side, failed to hit the back of the net.
Rovers started the brighter of the two sides as Ryan Inniss’ header flew over the bar after only a few minutes, meeting Callum Jones’ corner.
Soon after, Charlie McCann’s in-swinging free-kick met Tyrese Omotoye who again headed over the bar from 12 yards out.
FGR’S biggest chance of the match came after another Jones corner, this time met by Matty Stevens’ head, who hit the bar, just before the half hour mark.
Moments later, Callum Hendry headed his effort straight into goalkeeper Luke Daniels’ arms following a short free-kick routine from the visitors.
Kyle McAllister then shot from distance for Rovers which was destined for the bottom corner and forced a smart save out of Alex Cairns.
Omotoye then blazed an effort over the bar on halftime, after good work down the left hand side by Stevens.
It was McAleny’s shot that brought the first goal to the match early in the second half, as his effort fired into the bottom left hand corner.
Moments later, Salford nearly doubled their lead as Hendry found himself in on goal, but his shot was skied from 6 yards out.
The hosts looked to respond and with 10 minutes to go, substitute Matty Taylor’s long ranged curling effort whistled past the far post, which left Daniels watching helplessly.
The visitors sealed victory as they doubled their lead in stoppage time, when Luke Bolton squared the ball to substitute Matt Smith whose header couldn’t miss from four yards.
FGR, with the majority of the opportunities, continued to knock on the door with chances, however Neil Wood’s side hung on and headed home with a clean sheet and all three points.
