PREVIEW: Carlisle United

February 2nd 2021Conor Shaw

On the road again for Rovers - as Mark Cooper's charges head towards the Scottish Borders to face Carlisle United, in what should be an exciting clash between two promotion contenders.

Chris Beech's side currently occupy the second automatic promotion spot in Sky Bet League Two - and are level on points with FGR, but with three games in hand.

Here is all you need to know ahead of the game:

Paragraph Break

What we said

Carlisle-PreMatch-Body-1

"Every game feels the same. Without the crowds, it is totally different and anybody can beat anybody. We just have to turn up on the day and make sure we are really at it and focussed to play the game.

"It's a long trip, there's no doubting that. But, we'll be ready. That's for certain."

What they said

Carlisle-PreMatch-Body-2

“The conditions down at their place just before Christmas were horrendous, but they got the goal and the points, so well done to them for that,” Chris Beech said.

“I have a huge amount of respect for Mark [Cooper] and how he’s doing things, and I know his team will be looking to get back to picking up results consistently.

“They had a tough game against Cheltenham on Saturday and they showed again that they’re a team who will work hard and try to get on the front foot."

Key Player: Lewis Alessandra

A strong, instrumental forward, Lewis Alessandra initially joined United on a short-term deal back in last January transfer window.

A popular addition to the squad with a high work rate and goal threat in each of his 10 appearances, he was rewarded with an extended stay in Cumbria until the end of the current campaign

Previously with their local rivals Morecambe, the 31-year-old bagged five goals in his 26 appearances in the first half of 2019/20 season - and so far this season, he's scored six times in 22 league appearances for Beech's side.

Carlisle-PreMatch-Body-3

Last time we met

Jamille Matt's ninth goal of the season saw Rovers claim a 1-0 victory over Carlisle United at the innocent New Lawn back in December.

Matt stabbed the ball home after 76 minutes to stretch Rovers' unbeaten run to seven and bring an end to Carlisle's four-game winning streak.

FGR grew into the encounter – and after minutes of pressure, eventually broke the deadlock. The ball bounced in the area after a cross into the box – and after a melee on the goal line, lead marksman Matt squeezed the ball into the back of the net.

Head-to-head

The Cumbrians were unbeaten in the last five meetings between the two sides - but their defeat in December broke this streak.

Of the 11 meetings, Rovers have won three and earned a point in three.
