Goalkeeper Reyes won FGR's March Player of the Month

April 4th 2024Sam Yapp

Our Chilean shot-stopper Vicente Reyes was awarded Forest Green Rovers’ Quorn Star of the Month after earning 72% of the fan votes.

During March, Reyes pulled out some impressive performances which included some fine saves against Stockport County and Sutton United.

But one of his finest games came during our 2-0 win over Walsall which saw him make four crucial saves including a penalty save with the score at 1-0.

So, with 20-year-old making waves and saves in Steve Cotterill’s side let’s take a look at our emergency loanee’s career so far.

STARTING STATE SIDE

Born in Charleston, South Carolina, Reyes began his career 307 miles west at Atlanta United with their academy set up in 2020.

He was later promoted to the club's reserve team which featured in the USL Championship where the Chilean made 31 appearances keeping five clean sheets between 2020 and 2023.

But his stay in the US lasted just three years as his performances caught the eye of teams over here in England.

CUTTING THE MUSTARD IN ENGLAND

In the summer of 2023, Championship side Norwich City paid a sum of £75k to bring Reyes into their under-21 squad.

It took just eight appearances in the Premier League 2 with just two clean sheets and five squad involvements in the Championship for the then 19-year-old to be sent out for some first-team experience.

From October to November of 2023, National League South side Braintree Town secured Reyes’ services on a short-term loan.

Reyes made four appearances during his stay against sides such as Yeovil Town, Havant & Waterlooville and kept two clean sheets against Hemel Hempstead and Weston-Super-Mare (his first team debut).

COTTERILL’S SOLUTION

Following Luke Daniels' injury that saw him substituted during our defeat to Mansfield Town, Cotterill needed to find a quick replacement.

The emergency loan market was available and with the help of Norwich, Cotterill brought the shot-stopper to The New Lawn.

It was a tough fixture to kick off with for Reyes as he made his debut away to play-off chasing Barrow.

He made a lasting impression with his shot stopping, distribution and aerial claims that helped Rovers pick up a crucial win on the road.

Since then, he has made 11 appearances keeping four clean sheets and has stolen the hearts of Rovers fans in the process.
