VsNewport (A)

May 17th 2021Noah Dougherty

Here we go then.

Forest Green Rovers make the trip to Newport County for tomorrow evening's 8.15pm kick off, as they get their second League Two play-off campaign underway.

Here is all you need to know ahead of the game:

What we said:

Scunthorpe-home-Apr21-Ball2

"It's a privilege to have this kind of pressure," said Jimmy Ball.

"Pressure at the end of the season means you've done well. We're enjoying it and we'll go and play like we have been and hopefully come out on top.

"Both teams are in good form so it should be a cracking game of football."

What they said:

Wayne-Hatswell

“We know it’s going to be tough but we’ve given ourselves a good chance,” said Newport assistant Wayne Hatswell.

“It’s not a disappointment that we’ve not finished second or third. We’ve had our ups and downs and it’s been a tough season for everyone but we’ve had two cup runs and we’ve got to the play-offs again.

“There aren’t any negatives from this season and we’re going to go into it in full positive mode.”

Paragraph Break

Team news:

Nicky Cadden has a chance of making a return in time for the play-off campaign, but the first leg of the semi-final may come too quickly for the winger.

Key player: Josh Sheehan

Newport-home-Dec20-Sheehan

Coming through Swansea City’s academy, Josh Sheehan first joined Newport County AFC in August 2016 on loan until January the following year. The midfielder scored his first goal for the Exiles two months later, but made a return to the Swans in March following an injury that ruled him out for the remainder of the season.

Then, after much anticipation from County supporters, the Welshman re-signed in January 2018. Prior to his initial deal at Rodney Parade, Sheehan spent two loan spells at Yeovil Town during the 2015-16 season, where he scored two league goals in 26 appearances.

Last time we met:

Newport-away-Feb21-Matt

Goals from Josh Davison and Jamille Matt saw Rovers safely passed Newport County back in February.

Davison scored his second goal since joining on loan from Charlton in January three minutes before the break after Matt's long through pass.

Former Newport striker Matt doubled Rovers' lead with a second-half penalty after he was fouled by goalkeeper Nick Townsend.

Head-to-head:

Things hang finely in the balance in this one, with both sides winning five times in the fixture.

Despite seven draws, this match-up has delivered some classics, FGR winning 4-1, 5-0 and 4-3 over the years, as well as losing 4-0 and sharing the spoils in a sensational 3-3 draw in South Wales.

Rovers have won three and drawn three of their last six visits to Rodney Parade, including the 2-0 win earlier this season.
