Narrow defeat in Swansea clash

July 9th 2022FGR Media

Forest Green Rovers suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat to Championship side Swansea City in their latest pre-season training match.

Michael Obafemi gave the Swans an early lead, before Reece Brown's strike pulled the match level.

Armani Little netted his third in as many matches to take the lead, only to be cancelled out by Kyle Naughton before the break. A free-kick from Liam Cullen then secured the win for Russell Martin's side.

The visitors had the best opportunity to race into an early lead following some good work from Corey O’Keeffe. The wing-back managed to pick out Brown darting into the area - but the midfielder guided his header just wide of the mark.

Swansea took the lead twelve minutes into the encounter when Obafemi was fed through on goal. The Irishman managed to fend off a battle in the penalty area to coolly finish into the back of the net.

However, it wasn’t long until Rovers pulled the match level. New signing Brown did well to finish beyond Swans keeper Andy Fisher, after another good passage of play from Ian Burchnall’s side.

Rovers were looking impressive on the ball and dangerous moving forwards. Their resilience was rewarded when Regan Hendry's free-kick was fed short to Little, who expertly fired his strike into the back of the net from the edge of the penalty area.

Minutes before the interval and the hosts found the equaliser. Kyle Naughton from just inside the box - with a coolly struck low effort beyond former Swans stopper Lewis Thomas.

There were limited chances for both sides in the second half, with both Martin and Burchnall making a whole host of changes. Olivier Ntcham went the closest on the hour mark when his cross flashed across the face of goal, evaded two Swans men in the area.

But the match was won with four minutes left on the clock, when Liam Cullen's bending free-kick from 20-yards out was struck over the wall - nestling into the top corner.

XI: Thomas, O’Keeffe (Trialist 46), Bernard, Cargill (Bennett 65), Stevenson (Bunker 65), Hendry (Davis 65) Little, Trialist, Godwin-Malife (Casey 65), March (Trialist 46), Brown (Bell 65).
