Match Highlights
November 2nd 2024Rhys Anderson

Stockport County edged out Forest Green Rovers 2-1 after Extra Time at Edgeley Park in the First Round of the Emirates FA Cup.

The first half ended goalless with the best chance of the half falling to Tom Knowles in the seventh minute of the game as he curled an effort goalwards but the shot was well-saved by Ben Hinchcliffe.

Stockport County captain Fraser Horsfall opened the scoring in the 63rd minute with a half-volley inside the box into the opposite corner of the goal.

In the 79th minute, Kyle McAllister drilled a low effort just wide of the right post with his left foot as the visitors searched for an equaliser.

Just three minutes later, substitute Christian Doidge pounced on a defensive error to equalise in the 82nd minute with a left-footed strike into the back of the net after a great press from Adam May won the ball.

Cardwell almost won it for Rovers in the 90th minute with an overhead kick attempt but the ball dropped just over the crossbar.

Stockport went close seven minutes into the allotted additional time as the goalscorer Horsfall’s header sailed just wide after a previously cleared corner was crossed back in.

It was 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes and Rovers forced the League One outfit into an extra 30 minutes.

Tanto Olaofe forced Jamie Searle into an superb save with his outstretched right leg just seconds into extra time.

Wootton then gave Stockport the lead again with a tap-in at the back post after the ball was fizzed across the six-yard box eight minutes into the extra time period.

Despite being pushed all the way, third tier Stockport held on for victory and we bow out of the FA Cup in Round One.

Rovers take on Stoke City U21s in the National League cup on Tuesday before returning to league action on Saturday, 9 November, when they travel away to Maidenhead United.
