VsGrimsby (A)

March 5th 2021Noah Dougherty

Forest Green Rovers make the long trip to Grimsby Town tomorrow, with hopes of bouncing back from Tuesday night's defeat.

Mark Cooper's men came up trumps when the sides faced each other back in October, Jake Young scoring the only goal.

Here is all you need to know ahead of the game:

What we said:

Mark Cooper at Prenton Park

"Grimsby had a good result against Crawley a couple of weeks back, but they've lost some games since," said Mark Cooper.

"They'll be looking for a reaction as well, and Grimsby is always a difficult place to go.

"We're under no illusions as to how difficult it's going to be - they've got some really good players."

What they said:

“Our next opponents, not so much on Tuesday but maybe the Southend game, he (Mark Cooper) said they’d dropped their levels," said Grimsby boss Paul Hurst. “In near enough every conversation prior to a game, first and foremost he talked about outrunning the opposition, and he said they didn’t do that on the night against Southend. That’s a team at the top end of the league.

“Everyone knows the importance I place on working hard, and first and foremost I said to the players the other night no matter what position you are, you have to make it difficult for your opponent."

Team news:

Stevenage-away-Mar21-Cargill

Dan Sweeney remains on the long-term road to recovery, while Nicky Cadden and Chris Stokes remain doubtful.

Baily Cargill will have to miss this one after taking a knock to the head on Tuesday night.

Key player: James Hanson

Hanson joined the Mariners during the summer of 2019 on a two-year deal.

He started out in youth football with Huddersfield Town and Bradford City before moving into the non-league game, first with Eccleshill United and then with Guiseley.

There, over the course of two seasons, he scored 44 goals in 91 games, earning him a return to Bradford in July 2009.

James went on to become the club's joint third-highest goalscorer of all time, netting a total of 76 times, before joining Sheffield United in January 2017.

After a loan period with Bury, he joined Wimbledon.

Last time we met:

Teenage forward Jake Young made it three goals in four games to secure Forest Green Rovers victory over Grimsby and lift his side to third in the League Two table.

Mark Cooper's Rovers nosed ahead after 24 minutes when Nicky Cadden fed Liam Kitching to pick out Young, who finished clinically inside the box.

Head-to-head:

This will be the 21st meeting of the two sides, and Grimsby lead the way in the head-to-head.

The Mariners have 10 wins in this fixture, but none in the last five attempts, while Rovers have won four of the last five.

FGR's only other victories against Grimsby came in 2014 and 2015, both 2-1 home wins.
