Marcus Renzi's story

September 3rd 2021Noah Dougherty

We had the pleasure of welcoming Marcus Renzi to the FGR training ground last month, where he told the players and staff about his incredible journey into the world of football coaching.

Marcus had a stroke when he was eleven years old and is partially paralysed down the left side of his body, leaving him wheelchair-bound.

While he is already breaking down countless barriers by coaching in able-bodied youth and men's football, Marcus's main struggle is accessing pitches, especially during the winter months.

"When conditions are bad, my wheelchair can get bogged down in the mud and I have to ask parents and players to pull me out," he explained.

"Another challenge with my lack of mobility on the grass is that I can’t give my players a visual demonstration. It frustrates me that I can’t do this, so I have to adapt and explain the best I can, but I do it because I love coaching, it’s my passion."

Marcus has set up a gofundme page to raise money for a new, all-terrain wheelchair, which would transform the way he is able to coach year-round.

"It was fantastic to meet Marcus and his son," said Rob Edwards.

"The lads were great with them and really enjoyed chatting to Marcus and learning about his inspiring story.

"I'd encourage anyone who can help his cause to visit his page and donate what they can spare."
