Final friendly win at Yeovil

July 31st 2021Conor Shaw

Jamille Matt's first-half strike concluded Rovers pre-season campaign with victory over National League side Yeovil Town.

A simple finish inside the penalty area after great work from Kane Wilson on the right flank proved to be enough for the win.

With next week's season curtain raiser against Sutton United in mind, Rob Edwards fielded a strong line-up at Huish Park - with the inclusion of Matt as Rovers skipper.

The forward's goal in the opening stages of the encounter seemed to set the tone for the first-half - and the visitors continued to look sharp. Dom Bernard made a late appearance at the far post, looking to nod home Regan Hendry's cross - but the defender guided his effort off target.

Darren Sarll's side thought they had netted a leveller as the interval approached. Luke McGee made a superb save - but it fell into the path of striker Reuben Reid, who failed to stay onside, despite finding the back of the net.

The Glovers' search for their equaliser continued in the early stages of the second half. A defensive mix-up in the FGR penalty box gave Reid an open goal from 12-yards out - only for the former Rovers man to fire well over the crossbar.

Ten minutes later and Rovers almost doubled their lead in rather bizzare circumstances. Kane Wilson applied pressure to Jordan Barnett - which forced the Yeovil defender to loft a pass back directly at goal from distance, but Grant Smith managed to get his teammate out of jail with a heroic headed clearance.
