FGR Women ended the season in style with a 7-1 victory over Liskeard Athletic at Hartpury College.

Estelle Randall and Elle Scott bagged braces, with striker Rhian Robbins, Tori Taylor and Annie Martin also getting on the scoresheet in a comfortable victory in Gloucestershire.

It was a fantastic response to last weekend’s defeat at table-topping Bristol Rovers, and Head of Women’s Football Joe Manns was pleased how his side used that frustration to help finish their season with a bang.

“We’re really pleased,” he said. “We had a really tough game last week and we spoke about trying to respond in the most positive way, using any frustration and anger from last week and turning it into a positive performance.

“We went into the game confident as we beat Liskeard quite convincingly just two weeks ago [5-0 victory]. We took an early lead, then it went to 1-1, but we didn’t let that impact us. It was a really strong first half performance and the second half was about keeping a clean sheet.

“The amount of opportunities we created today was outstanding. We scored seven but it could have been more. We took our chances, there were some great strikes from long range and I’m pleased for a number of players getting on the scoresheet.”

FGR are the first side in the South West Regional Premier Division to complete their season, with most clubs still having a couple of matches to play. A fourth-placed finish is the most likely outcome for Rovers, accumulating 27 points from their 16 games.

With just one defeat in their final nine games, FGR ended the season positively, also racking up 28 goals in that time. That type of form gives Manns the confidence that Rovers will head into the next season with momentum behind them.

“It was a really nice way to finish the season,” said Manns. “It’s a short season, it’s only February. We’ll now focus on friendlies and improving performances, before we focus on pre-season and having the most positive preparation we can for next year.

“If you take out the Bristol Rovers game, which unfortunately we can’t, then the last eight or nine games have been really positive. I’m pleased with the team performance and really happy with some individuals as well.

“Our home form has been really strong. We only lost one game at home, we just need to make sure we put things right in terms of preparing right for away games.”
