Forest Green Rovers Women progressed to the next round of the Vitality Women’s FA Cup after an emphatic 5-1 victory against Almondsbury on Sunday afternoon.
Playing in front of 369 supporters at The Fully Charged New Lawn, Chris Hicks made one change to the starting XI from last week's 2-2 draw with Torquay - Sian Towler in for Kayleigh Hateley.
Nynka Rucker looked dangerous early on, with Rovers’ number seven beating the Almondsbury full-back on several occasions.
The hosts enjoyed an encouraging spell of possession in the opening five minutes of proceedings here on Another Way, with Hattie Jones pulling off a skilful flicked back-pass to Rucker, who couldn’t quite get a shot away.
Ella Hitchcox - one of the goalscorers from the Torquay game - then delivered a tempting cross for Annie Martin, who was unable to truly trouble the Almondsbury goalkeeper.
Then, with just nine minutes on the clock, Jones opened the scoring for Rovers following a great piece of play with Annie Martin. The attacking midfielder played a delightful one-two pass with Martin, before poking home to give the hosts the lead.
Louise Fensome then tried her luck with a dipping effort from a long-range free-kick, but her strike unfortunately didn’t drop enough to challenge the Almondsbury defence.
Martin went on a surging run, driving towards the box with speed, before being tackled last minute by a determined Almondsbury defender.
Rovers were starting to dominate proceedings in terms of chances on goal, while both teams were enjoying spells of possession throughout the game.
Sam Morris pulled off a great recovery tackle to halt Almondsbury from having a chance on goal, before Zoe Boyd executed an impressive interception and clearance, keeping things tight at the back for the hosts.
Rucker and Hitchcox’s pace was starting to become too much to handle for the Almondsbury backline, with the wingers continuing to have great luck attacking from wide areas.
Sian Towler weaved through the visitors defence before shooting goalwards but her effort was calmly collected by Sophie Cooper in goal for Almondsbury.
Martin, Hitchox and Towler combined well in and around the box, but the trio just couldn't quite get a shot away on goal.
With minutes to go until half-time, Rucker fired home to double the lead for Rovers, after a teasing cross from Martin on the left hand side.
After assisting Rucker for Rovers’ second goal in the first half, Martin came close with a curling effort that sailed just high of the crossbar.
Then, with 50 minutes of football played, there was a flurry of chances for Rovers in the penalty box.
Jones struck the post, before Hitchcox eventually fired home to make it 3-0.
Hicks had swapped his wingers around at half-time, with Hitchcox on the right flank for the second half and Rucker on the left.
The duo were causing lots of trouble with their pace - Hitchcox almost finding the net with an audacious effort from far out on the right hand side.
Following Rovers’ third goal, Hicks made his first substitutions of the afternoon as Martin made way for Charlie Rowlands and Kayleigh Hateley replaced Towler.
The hosts were looking extremely comfortable in Nailsworth, with Morris carrying the ball out of defence in impressive fashion on occasion. The defender found Hitchcox out wide who squared a cross looking for Rowlands, but the sub unfortunately couldn’t quite get on the end of it.
Then, in the 64th minute, Jones grabbed her second goal of the day in spectacular fashion. Rovers’ number nine unleashed a powerful volley from just inside the box, with her effort surging past Cooper in goal, to make it 4-0 to the hosts.
The visitors grabbed a goal back in the 70th minute, but Rovers still continued to look dangerous going forward, with Rowlands having a fierce shot on goal collected by Cooper.
Dyana Peacey was then brought on for the remainder of the game, with player of the match Jones coming off the pitch to a standing ovation in Nailsworth.
Peacey had an instant impact from the bench, scoring just minutes after coming on to make the score 5-1 to Rovers.
Despite her best efforts and several chances in and around the penalty box, Rowlands couldn’t quite grab herself a goal, with Almondsbury putting in some impressive last ditch defending with minutes left of play.
The clash went on to finish 5-1 to Forest Green, with Hicks’ side putting in a fantastic performance at The Fully Charged New Lawn to progress to the next round of the Vitality Women’s FA Cup.
