Deeney: "We're starting to click"

Player-Coach takes positives from Magpies defeat

Forest Green Rovers Player-Coach Troy Deeney believes the side are starting to click following two positive performances.

Although Rovers have ultimately come away from the last two games with zero points, David Horseman's side followed up a dominant display against Doncaster with a strong second half fightback against Notts County, with Rovers coming out the wrong end of a seven-goal thriller.

Deeney inspired the second half fightback at Meadow Lane by scoring a hat-trick, but it wasn't enough to see FGR claim a point in Nottingham.

"It feels like deja vu," said Deeney. "It's like last weekend [2-1 defeat to Doncaster] where we created lots of chances. The obvious difference is that we scored more goals this weekend.

Troy Deeney

"At the start of the game I felt like we were in awe of them, with them being top of the league, big stadium. The goals we conceded were very soft.

"2-0 down, it's easy to play when you've got that bit of freedom. We scored while we were on top today and when you get the second you're thinking 'here we go'. This weekend showed the commitment from the players and staff.

"To go 2-0 down, then get it back to 2-2, and then to go 4-2 down - a lot of people here would crumble, but we went again."

Deeney became the fourth FGR player to score a hat-trick in the EFL - managing it on just his fourth start for the club. His first goal oozed class, turning in the box with his back to the net and firing the ball into the bottom corner.

The 35-year-old added a second just five minutes later, hooking the ball into a dangerous area and ending up in the back of the net, while he completed his scoring with an emphatic penalty.

"We've been working on trying to get me in those sorts of areas [for the first goal], because that's where I feel a lot stronger than most in this league. I got my shot off quickly, which is what I've done throughout my whole career.

"The second goal was of course a bicycle kick into the top corner! In all seriousness, I just wanted to put the ball into an area.

"The third goal, I've been taking penalties like that for a little while now. About four years ago I told goalkeepers where I go, but none of them seem to stand up!

"If I'd scored the fourth and got a point, I think it would have been a defining moment in our season. A lot of teams will look at us now and go 'ooo, they're starting to click.'"

Having signed for Rovers late in the summer window, Deeney is behind most players went it comes to fitness, but after registering his fourth consecutive start, he is slowly getting towards where he needs to be.

"The numbers are showing that I'm getting fitter, stronger and leaner," he said. "I feel like I could play another game again.

"Scoring goals is what I've been asked to come in and do, as well as add experience, and I feel like we're getting there.

"I'm loving it here. Mondays are my coaching day so I get loads of work done. The gaffer has started letting me take meetings, so it's a great learning experience.

"How the gaffer and Louis [Carey] have opened me into the coaching world has been nothing short of fantastic and I'll be forever grateful."
