FGR Women recorded their first victory of the season by beating rivals Bristol Rovers Women 2-1 at Lockleaze Sports Centre.

Rovers’ first real chance came on 23 minutes as Zoe Boyd looked to find the opener cutting in from the left before firing a powerful effort at goal which was well held by the Gas keeper.

Louise Fensome was the next to try her luck from range just 10 minutes later as her curling free kick nearly nestled into the far top corner.

Caitlin Leach did excellently in the Rovers goal to deny the hosts from taking the lead in the seventh minute of first half stoppage time and it would prove to be vital moments later.

With one of the last actions of the first half Rovers had the opener through Charlie Rowlands who did well on the turn to roll home Boyd’s pinpoint cross at the second time of asking.

Into the second half and the hosts drew level not long after the hour mark as Zoe Fielden-Stewert got the Gas back into the proceedings, setting up a tense finish.

But it would be Rovers who would go on to take all three points, and it was a great move that brought the winning goal 10 minutes from time.

Skipper Hattie Jones stormed forward before finding Boyd whose shot was saved only into the path of Rowlands who fired home the winner at the back post for her fourth goal in two games.

The win means Rovers continue their unbeaten start to the league season ahead of the visit of Torquay United Women to Hartpury next Sunday.

Rovers Head Coach Neil Moore said on the win: “It was a good result. We probably didn’t play the way that I wanted us to play but we got the result which is brilliant.

“They’re (Bristol Rovers) going to be a good team that’s up there but I’m just happy that we came away, didn’t play our best game but still came away with the three points.”
