Bob Hunt Tribute

Iconic BBC Commentator passes away

May 2nd 2024FGR Media

We're sad to hear of the passing of Legendary commentator Bob Hunt. Bob had a unique style bursting with energy coupled with a brilliant sense of humour.

The BBC commentator became a staple fixture at Forest Green Rovers and Gloucestershire County Cricket Club since he began reporting from their grounds in the early 80s.

In a career spanning five decades, Bob saw Gloucestershire’s historic 2015 Royal London Cup win over Surrey at Lord’s and their promotion from Division Two to Division One of the Championship in 2019.

His commentary of Rovers' promotion-earning win in 2017 was iconic. It resonates with supporters to this day and it even made it on to BBC One’s Have I Got News For You, when he roared: “Let me tell you this – Cheltenham, Swindon, Newport – you are going to eat hummus next season, because Forest Green Rovers are in the Football League!”

Bob was the voice of Forest Green for a number of years - he will be remembered.

Paragraph Break

Son and current BBC Radio Gloucestershire commentator Billy Hunt said:

Dad loved being a part of Forest Green. Him and the club were a perfect match, doing things another way.Whilst his commentary may not have been the most professional he focused on making people laugh and ensuring people were entertained - no matter what the result.

I couldn't ask much more then working with my Dad commentating on a club we both support. The memories of going up and down the country with him and working together at Wembley to see Forest Green get promoted will live with me for a lifetime. There will be many memories of Dad and I know he would have put a smile on anyone's face who knew or listened to him.

Chairman Dale Vince, who had many fun moments with Bob both on a personal and professional level, added:

Bob was always fun to be around, always chirpy and up for a laugh. I shocked him, first season, when we escaped relegation on the last day - when I swore live on the radio - he never let me forget that. His off the cuff Wembley line was simply stunning, perfect capture of the moment and who we are. I miss him for sure.

Here are some moments Bob will be remembered for:

  • His unique style that combined humour and an ability to convey the excitement of the game, which earned him the title “ballistic Bob”.

  • His £3 wager on Forest Green to 5-1 away at Alfreton at odds of 125-1 in 2011 – only to have it snatched out of his hands when Rovers put away a sixth in the 96th minute.

  • His reporting on other sports including rugby union, horse racing, synchronised swimming and the 400th anniversary of the ancient Cotswold Olimpicks, where memorably he described a contestant in the sack race as “bounding like a demented kangaroo in lane five”.

  • Reporting with his son Billy Hunt from The New Lawn.

Our thoughts are with Bob’s family during this time.
