Described as ‘the greenest football club in the world’, sustainability is central to everything we do at Forest Green Rovers, which is why we became a vegan football club In 2015.
After two home games and two weeks since our last away game, Rovers head to Sheffield Wednesday this weekend returning to league action.
In the third instalment of this seasons vegans guide series, here’s a look at the city of Sheffield ahead of our first visit to Hillsborough.
FOOD
Church - Temple of Fun

Saturday Opening Times: 12:00PM
Located a short drive away from Hillsborough you’ll find Church – Temple of Fun. Owned by Bring Me The Horizon frontman Oliver Sykes, the fully vegan venue is a great spot to grab a burger or hot dog etc. ahead of kick-off. In addition if you fancy a drink when at the Church, head to the bar for a range of beverages that are free of any animal products.

Wharncliffe Works, Cornish Street, Sheffield S6 3FB
Saturday Opening Times: 11:00AM – 11:00PM
A 10 minute walk from the above mentioned Temple of Fun is V or V, a fully vegan sit down spot with a real variety of meals. ‘Sheffield’s first plant based licensed evening restaurant’, V or V offers both a daytime and evening menu as well as bottomless brunch for those who are getting to Sheffield early. So book yourself a table for a bite to eat ahead of the showdown with the Owls on Saturday.
Blue Moon Cafe
2 St James’ Street, Sheffield City Centre, Sheffield S1 2EW
Saturday Opening Times: 10:00AM – 4:30PM
If you’re in the city centre before the game on Saturday why not visit Blue Moon Café, one of Sheffield’s original vegan spots. Established in 1995 the fully vegan/vegetarian café is really worth a look at if you’re in the area. Whether it be a proper meal or just a quick bite, be sure to drop into the Blue Moon for some food and drink.
Make No Bones
10 Hicks Street, Neepsend, Sheffield S3 8BL

‘Born from a hunger to make the vegan option’, Make No Bones is a place you’re really going to want to visit. If you don’t know what you want don’t worry, the menu has a real range from burgers to sandwiches to a variety of small plates. In the same location as our first drink spot, (The Old Workshop) it’s the perfect place to go before kick-off especially if you are heading to Hillsborough from the city centre.

Home of the Make No Bones food spot (above), The Old Workshop is a fully vegan bar that serves a range of drinks catered for vegans. Beers, wines, cocktails, spirits you name it, this place is where you want to go for a vegan tipple before game time. So why not head down to The Old Workshop and if you’re a fan of your keg beer, be sure to check their ‘changing guest list’ on the website.
Gaard Coffee Hide
20-22 Burton Road, Neepsend, Sheffield S3 8EP
Saturday Opening Times: 8:00AM – 5:00PM
If it’s a coffee, tea or shake that you’re feeling on Saturday, head to the Gaard Coffee Hide in Neepsend. Being a seven minute drive from Hillsborough and a short walk from Shalesmoor Tram Stop, the hidden hide also offers snacks and sweet treats to accompany your vegan beverage. Check them out on Instagram and you’ll see some of the amazing food and drink they have in store.

The Bare Alternative

The Bare Alternative is located in Nether Edge in the South of Sheffield and could be somewhere to drop in to on your way to Hillsborough. This ‘affordable eco-friendly’ refill shop’s main concern is to help in the local community by making sustainable shopping accessible to all. So if you’re near S7, remember to bring your containers and take advantage of what the shop has to offer.
Unwrapped

In Crookes you can find Unwrapped Ltd, a zero waste shop that stocks a wide range of vegan products for you to pick up. A 10 minute drive from Hillsborough you’ll be able to purchase a variety of items including a range of foods, grains and pulses as well as household products. So if you’ve got the time go and see the great team at Unwrapped to restock your shelves.
