Rovers suffered a 5-1 defeat to Barnsley at The Bolt New Lawn, as relegation from League One was confirmed.
Rovers began brightly with two good opportunities to trouble the Barnsley defence, when Kyle Mcallister and Charlie Savage both got in-behind the backline, but the assistant raised his flag for both attacks.
Barnsley would take the lead eight minutes in through a headed effort from Slobodan Tedic, which flew past Ross Doohan following a corner from Luca Connell.
It would take Rovers just moments to have a goalscoring opportunity of their own as Savage looked to progress through the Barnsley defence and unleash a shot which had to be parried wide by Harry Isted.
The visitors doubled their lead in the 30th minute through Adam Phillips, when his deflected half-volley strike from outside the 18-yard-box found the back of the net.
Seven minutes later, another corner kick led to a third Barnsley goal through former Forest Green forward James Norwood, giving the visitors a three goal lead going into the break.
Six minutes after the second interval, Dylan McGeouch tangled legs with Bobby Thomas on the corner of the penalty area and the referee pointed to the spot. Phillips stood over the spot but saw his attempt saved by Doohan, but the 25-year-old was there to convert the rebound.
Substitute Reece Brown was played in on the edge of the box by Myles Peart-Harris and hit his strike first time into the bottom left corner, giving no chance to the visitors ‘keeper Isted.
Rovers' consolation goal would be cancelled out moments before the full 90 minutes had been played when Jordan Williams whipped a dangerous ball across the six-yard-box, with Devante Cole’s outstretched leg poking the ball home.
